Morning Commute:
Argh – like a cock hole I forgot to stop the timer so my 16.5mph average time on the Garmin has dropped to 14.2mph
I won’t be able to post the figures until I’ve edited it later – but they where quick – 48 minutes or so, 81rpm cadence, 146bpm average heart rate are for defo – just time and avg speed to sort out!
The day started off a disaster – my wife and daughter where walking to the car when an asshole sprinting down a dark alley on a bike had to slam on his brakes and perform an emergency stop mere cms away from my family. Lucky for him that he didn’t collide, because he would have literally been battered to within an inch of his life.
He then, as I followed him commenting that he’s a dick (under my breath) he rolled his bike out into another road with a car coming left whilst he was (the cyclist) on the wrong side of the road…. He then did exactly the same thing again, forcing a car into an emergency stop and a “beeeeeeeep” of the horn.
I don’t wish ill on people, but if he got hit by a car today – it would not surprise me.
The race was won by me to nursery, but that was by the by this morning as I was angry with the chap from previous, therefore adrenaline was assisting me all the way.
Most of the journey was simple and safe, which was a bonus after the couple of days that I’ve had and now I am ready for work – although full of wind as I had a Paal last night!
Evening Commute:
Total Distance: 9.64 miles
Total Time:44m 49s
Max Speed: 23.90mph
Avg Speed: 12.91mph
Max H/Rate: 174bpm
Avg H/Rate: 151bpm
Cadence: 76rpm
I’m gonna be quick tonight as am off out, but I’d like to firstly thank British Gas for the asshole drivers that they employ, that physically try and ram you off the road coming up to a junction whereby a cyclist is trying to make themselves more visible and less safe. Fuck You!!! Video to follow and be sent to you!
I managed to catch a ride with the shrinker tonight and have a catch up because he’s been a busy boy at work and been going in early and leaving early (?) – to all who are concerned / interested – he’s alright and he actually looks about a stone lighter than when I saw him last – I didn’t want to tell him that because his head would have grown and put a stone back on!
We both ended up behind a tool riding up Hyde Road with no lights on his bike (Red – I’ve a video of my lights from the same place this morning, with my bike facing the other way – the light lights up the whole house about 120ft away whilst passing through a lampost – but I will also do the lampost test too).
Denton saw one RLJer today – but that tends to be the case on a Friday night – everyones happy that they are going home, so less hassle trying to get there.
Saw another car using the secret shortcut in Hyde Town Centre, and then I bumped into Mr British Gas.
Arrived home safely eventually, but also angry at the tossbag above.
Now off for a Chinese.

This is why cyclists often get a bad name. This is also why I think shared use ‘cyclepaths’ are a bad idea. A cycle path should be for cyclists not for dog walkers. If cyclists rode along shitting all over the path they’d soon get banned!

Yup, your right – and statistically, its these assholes that are less likely to get hit on the roads.
Funny you should mention dog shit on cycle paths as I went right through some today on the cycle path that was built for the olympic athletes to get too and from the Velodrome.
Dirty dog!

It’s dark, he has no lights on and he’s wearing black clothing. It looks like your ninja cyclist has a death wish.

Yup.
Had he collided – he would have got that wish

This is him 3 minutes later:

(if you’ve no sound, the car has to brake suddenly and beep at him)

While your at it those lights of yours don’t exactly appear to be brilliant either, perhaps it’s the camera and they are brighter in real life?
There’s no sign of them on the cars / fences around where you’re riding. There’s just this small blob 2/3m infront of the bike. It’s worth parking your bike under a street-light and then walking 200m down the road. If you can’t see the lights clearly looking for them, then no driver looking for car headlights is ever going to notice them.
Stay safe Joby.

I have one of these:

And one of these flashing on the front:

I also have one of these for backup:

I often worry about the front lights, but you can see it from a good way away – I test this with my wife when she’s out on the road and she looks back at me to see if I am visible.
The camera makes it look darker than it is too.
I’ll take a pic of the garden this weekend with my lights on to see what sort of brightness I get just to be on the safe side.

Blimey, he does have a death wish as well.
Not only does he go down the inside of a car indicating to turn left (asking to get squished) he pulls out straight infront of someone!

Incidentally, it does light up road signs from 1/4 of a mile away very well

Yup, also previous to that manouvre he pulled out in front of another car whilst he was cycling up the wrong side of the road – the video clip is hampered by a parked car, which was a shame.

I can’t believe that Olympic cyclists are shitting on their own paths. Incidentally, will they all be moved darn sarth when they rebuild London for the Olympics? Southern B@stards.

You have a point – what are they doing pooing in their own cycle lanes?

Unless you’ve got a huge garden how much light they cast on the wall of the shed arguably doesn’t matter. Lock the bike to a lamp-post and then have a wonder down to the end of the road. You’ll soon see if your light(s) stand out or not.

I do have a huge garden
But yes – I will do that tonight when I meet Gaz – I’ll pull away as usual then turn round and get him to see if he can see me.
My light is a couple up from his and I can see him from a long long way away so fingers crossed, t’utherwise I’m gonna have to buy another light
