An interesting thing happened to me today near the Shell Garage heading up to Snipe Retail Park. For those that know it, there are three lanes – one goes down to Guide Bridge, two take you round to Snipe, which then break up into three lanes – 2 for Snipe and one for Ashton Town Centre.
Anyway, this inward sweeping corner is very dangerous – 40/50mph cars on a 30 stretch, barging to get the best spot. At this corner I pull out into the middle of the road – its safe – most drivers – infact 99% of drivers actually can see this and stay well back.
Not the big 4×4 driver this morning who decided that he needed to get from his lane into my lane… Whilst coming round the corner – at speed – leaving me 6in or so.
Of course, he got the obligatory “head shake” and “the bird” and I carried on.
At the lights a car pulled up to the side of me and wound down his window. I wondered whether he was going to start having a go at me like the “doctor” from the other month (when the BMW driver tried to ram me off my bike).
We had a chat and he said that he saw what the driver had done and couldn’t believe it and that he bets he’d never been on a bike!
There are some crackingly good drivers out there – 99.99% of them to be honest! He certainly was one of them – cheers.
Rest of the journey was littered with mobile phone users, speeders and the usual stuff – but all in a mornings cycling.
As for the weight comment – 4lbs this week – hopefully I can keep it off! And I’ve not been starving myself either – so cycling must be the key. At the next Weigh-In, I’ll stick my weeks diet on there so we can all discuss.
Evening Commute:
Like a fool, I forgot to turn the bloody Garmin on on the way home, so thats ruined my trip home and I don’t want to talk about it. It was a good time too.
On a separate note, a woman on the way home made me realise why I actually do FBD! I was travelling at the same speed of a van in front of me, giving myself and himself enough distance incase he needed to brake… The woman behind me didn’t like this and tried riding her car at me to overtake me.
I help my arm out and flapped it up and down in a slow down motion and she backed off a little.
When the opportunity arose I pulled over so she could get past…. She slowed down and told me off for taking up half the road… But then wouldn’t slow down to let me discuss how she was going to do that… Could I report her for dangerous driving? I think I could put in a complaint – video would back it up…
Taking into account
a) I was going the same speed as the traffic
b) There wasn’t enough room for her to pull in front of me safely
c) The overtake manouvre she tried would have failed her her driving test
d) I was riding down a hill in a safe position – 3ft ish away from the ice on the side of the road.
She ruined what was a perfectly cracking ride home. Thanks lady.
Now I am glad that the Tameside Advertiser are running a report on FBD next week. I might even put your registration plate on here love so that when you read the article (if you can read of course) then you’ll come across this site – view the video that I will be putting here, sit back and think “Shit – is my driving THAT bad?”
Here’s the lovely lady in all her glory. Unfortunately, I can’t make the reg plate out – shame:

You’re right mate, most of them are ok, apart from knob head pick up wagon driver in Selly Oak and knob head 4 x 4 driver for me this morning.
The Muvi doesn’t give a good idea of how close they actually get does it?

Unfortunately not. I’ve often reviewed close scrapes and they don’t look that bad on the muvi.
You could always tap on the window loudly if they are that close – then it will pick up on the Muvi.
Or carry a tape measure?

Did I miss where you mentioned that you were in the Daily Mail yesterday? Excellent photo of you, though I never realised you were a midget. Can I say midget? Do you prefer small person? Nanus?

Mmm.
Seriously wishing I hadn’t bothered though – there are some hateful people out there who really don’t give a shit.

I sympathise. Honestly and seriously, I really do. The Dail Mail (and the Sun to a lesser extent) is a paper for kneejerk reactionary scumbags though. Soon you’ll be accused of mugging old ladies and harbouring illegal immigrants to further your vigilante (nee terrorist) mission. Tosspots.
Just my opinion though, I wouldn’t ram it down anyone’s throat.

Its very worrying. Have contacted relevant peoples to stop stories appearing…
“Snowball” and “not expecting it to” come to mind.

Hope the snowball effect calms down the the impending dirty thaw, as promised on the BBC last night. Take care.

Never doubt yourself. Mark my words: this project will make your name. I think the reason it’s snowballing is because you’ve tapped into a thickly throbbing cultural vein. The battle between cyclists and drivers is eternal. You are well on your way to becoming the Homer of our age.

I have not had time to read the comments from the mail and the sun, I getthe general idea though, shame people feel the need to make knee-jerk reaction comments, into something that is a real positive, I hope this doesn’t put you off the cause too much.
As for becoming the new “Homer”, I thought the weight-loss was to avoid this?
Oh, hang-on different Homer maybe, Doh

I agree, don’t be put off by the comments of a few mail and sun readers.
For everybody who complains, even if only a handful of drivers are better behaved as a result of reading the article, then a life may be saved and its been worth the effort.
The internet, forums, news groups etc. are funny places. The people who freely criticise the site and what it stands for, would run a mile if you offered to discuss the issues with them face to face.
Keep up the good work!

Absolutely spot on Chris, the protection of an anonomous internet site is meat and drink to all manner of non-entities who use it as their only outlet. Face to face they’d be as meek as kittens.

Appreciate the support – but your all cyclists (even Uncle Dick – although I believe he’s a much much better writer than cyclist, owning a raleigh chopper).

True, I am a cyclist. But on most commutes, I get just as pissed of with red light jumping cyclists as I do with bus drivers or motorists.
Maybe you should change the site name to “Fight Tossers”, then you would get universal support… ohh apart from tossers… But then they would be admitting that they were tossers…

I do ride a bike but not a Raleigh Chopper. I could never get to grips with having a gear stick between my thighs. Also the slightly recumbent angle put me off — it’s an age-related sleep problem I have when at an incline or when it’s gone dark.
I’m sure you regular cyclists are interested in my current ‘mount’; a rusting Raleigh X2 (in grey). It’s a prince amongst bikes, which I bought because I liked the name. X2. It sounds like it regularly breaks the sound barrier and possibly does.

Do you break the sound barrier on the pavements? That could lead to some issues and negativity that I have encountered
#17 by Dick Madeley on January 14, 2010 - 4:18 pm

No, when cycling on pavements, I prefer to do so stealthily, so people have very little chance of leaping out of the way, which they usually do cradling babies in their arms. I mean, what is the point of being a militant cyclist with a love for Nietzschean philosophy if I can’t impose my will and treat pavements as the cycle routes always promised but rarely delivered?
