Firstly, we are having a ride Sunday morning. I think the aim is to complete the Manchester 100k route. Anyone interested then I will be setting off from my house at 8am and heading over to Parswood to meet up with @ChrisB112. @emmarush is joining too, but don’t know what she is doing regarding meeting at Parswood.
After yesterdays disastrous commute home I was expecting much of the same this morning due to a few reasons. My hours have changed at work as I’ve supposedly been doing the wrong hours (but looking at it logically, thats impossible so I need to bring that back up) so have to go the old way to work now to make sure I am in on time, and, because of the time setting off, traffic is always going to be an issue.
I wasn’t disappointed – not 100m from my house a BMW nearly rode into me by trying to cut a corner. Not the best thing on ice. And as I came to an abrupt stop – he thanked me and carried on. WTF?
Plymouth Grove came – doing approximately 24mph down towards Upper Brook Street when some tard of the re variety followed another car out of a junction right into my path. Queue brakes. He didn’t see me? Course he did because the second I gave him the V he wound his window down and shouted “wanker”.
Mmmm.
I managed to navigate round most of the traffic into town without issue after that (about 1/2 mile) – which was good until I arrived on Oxford Road. I was merrily pedalling down the bus lane when out of the corner of my eye I spotted a taxi trying to pull into me. I had to apply brakes to make sure he didn’t hit me.
I pulled up to him 2 seconds later at the lights (??) and he wound down his window. I mentioned that he was heading for me and he said that he was pulling into the lane – what was my point? Grrrrrrr. I explained that nearly hitting me wasn’t the best thing for him to be doing whilst sat in a car with a big taxi plate on the back of the taxi, and that, doing things like that would mean that I wouldn’t get home to see my child.
After last night I decided the best way forward was to be calm, plus, today its on camera, so I have stuff to back up my actions.
Who would commute in rush hour? After last night I debated with myself whether to give it up as my life is more important to me and my family than my weight and fitness. I can cover 100 miles once a week in one big ride.
Evening Commute:
Total Distance: 8.78 miles
Total Time: 58m 56s
Max Speed: 20.7ph
Avg Speed: 8.9mph
Cadence: 65rpm
Here is the taxi driver thingymibob from this morning:
And now the journey home… mmmm… For those that don’t know – its been snowing like crazy up here since 3:30ish. This made the whole world panic and try and escape Manchester.
Of course this didn’t work and within 5 minutes of me leaving work I hit traffic jams. Tonight wasn’t the night to be filtering, so I just sat patiently in the traffic, dead centre in the lane – taking in the fact that all cyclists cause is traffic jams… Its not the cars on the road that cause it… Despite me taking 50+ minutes to get home and had a pause time of 40 minutes.
I sat there and inched forward. Sat there and inched forward. Slowly and safely making my way home. Cars around me where excellent.
As I was coming down towards Denton a woman signalled and pulled out into the lane slowly. She had seen me and I know she had seen me. She pulled out slowly and safely. I pulled up at the side of her and her window came down. We chatted. I asked if she’d looked in her mirror (knowing she had) just to hear her response.
I thanked her when she’d finished for actually taking care and consideration for a cyclist and complemented that there aren’t many people like her on the roads.
I approached the situation in the wrong way – but just wanted to hear what a sensible person says in response to being questioned. If she got the wrong end of the stick – sorry – didn’t mean it like that. I did appreciate it.
Home now – happy that I cycled. Unfortunate that I couldn’t try out my new route with the snow coming down, but hopefully the weather will pick up over the next couple of decades and I’ll get to try it
Time for sausage, mash and beans.

Hummm, its a hell of a tricky question that, would you manage a 100 mile ride once a week? time and so on..Im SURE you have been through this, is there anyway you can change your hours to avoid rush hour? Clearly your family are VERY important, but do you really want to do the train / bus / car commute every day?
Lets hope that now the better weather is coming drivers will smarten up.
I really hope you know what Im getting at, not very good at this articulation business, but I hope you keep at it matey
Drop me a mail if you need to

LOL – I’m know what your getting at.
100 miles won’t be an issue, and time wise I think Louise and Lily would rather not see me for 6 hours on a Saturday or Sunday morning than ever again.
I think I’m just having one of those “depression” phases.
Must be on the internet too much.

I think Matt’s right, a lot is down to the weather. This morning was dark and frosty, so that’s against you from the start. Mornings like this make me nervous, before cars are added to the equation.
My solution has been to stop riding on the road bike and start commuting on the old heavy MTB, it feels safer, slower and the riding position is better for traffic. Also the added weight, gives a better work out, plus when you do ride the rode bike it will seem to fly!
I have a feeling that even when the weather improves I will still commute on the MTB and save the road bike for weekends.

It sucks, traffic. I am scared when I ride without traffic, nevermind in rush hour.
I’ve been slightly down this week too, strange. Maybe it’s coming back from Wales that has done it.
Can you put your other bike on Ebay? Mtn bike would be good option and save road bike for 100k rides. You could use your Mtn Bike slush fund like I’m going to
Or, you could get 24 months interest free credit here http://www.sunsetmtb.co.uk/ which is what I will end up doing I believe.
If you’re riding to Parrswood, I’ll ride with you if that’s ok. Is it Sunday or Saturday btw?

You wouldn’t be human if you didn’t have down moments Joby. Besides, the amount of near misses you’ve had is bound to make you think of your mortality.
Chin up, keep that cheeky chappie persona there. We’re all going through similar motions to you, so we know how you’re feeling.
Things will perk up when the weather improves

I hope so. Am desperately trying to find a more “off the rush hour” way to get home but getting over the M60 seems to be the stumbling block.
Windmill Lane is full of speeders – although has the speed limit changed their recently?
Hyde Road is full of tosspots that force you to ride in the gutter.
Ashton Old Road – the less said about that the better – plus I have that huge roundabout to contend with on the way back.

No offence Joby but I seriously doubt you’d manage a weekly 100mile ride this time of year. Its also a lot harder to ride 100 miles in one go than 20 per day.
You’d be out of the house for about 8 hours. When it’s bloody freezing and raining heavily, like it is most of the time at the moment, this really wont be fun.
I would aim to do a weekly ride of just say 50ish miles (like most club riders do ) with the odd 100milers once a month or so.

None taken.
Am looking at joining the Tameside Trail as soon as possible off Hyde Road and that should take me across to Audenshaw and down Stamford Street into Hyde.
Dunno if its possible on a road bike – am studying maps and photographs now.
Failing that, I may go down Stockport Road onto the Fallowfield Loop and make my way over the M60 via Windmill Lane – keeping off the main roads.
Fingers crossed I can find a suitable route in the next 2 hours!

There’s some way you can do this along the canal. I’ll ask Dave & Gyp if they ever figured a route to work out (they would go in from Ashton, if they could get their arses on their bikes).
Mind you, canal in the dark… maybe not.
Stockport Rd is horrendous in rush hour isn’t it?

If I use main roads I have a choice of Stockport Road, Hyde Road or Ashton Old Road. I don’t mind joining them briefly but prefer to get off as quick as possible.
A chap showed me a back way route up and across Ryder Brow and over onto Denton Island but it ended up my cycling down a pavement for about 100m – can’t really be seen doing that now can I!
Plus, I can’t remember the bloody route.

Look, Mr. J. I think you need to step back and listen to your Uncle Dick for a moment. I always provide the voice of reason.
I think we both know that this whole biking enterprise started because somebody else was willing to buy you a bike. You’ve shown your commitment and you’ve got the free bike. Now you can go back to using public transport or the car. It’s quicker, easier, and much safer.
Just change the title of the blog to ‘Driving to Work’ and we can start to enjoy your daily adventures as you run cyclists off the road, give them the finger, and other crazy antics involving bad language, random acts of violence, and a high calorie intake.

nice. I’ve never really had a problem with the majority of drivers, even when I was commuting every day. Yesterday though with 2 sets of lights flashing, in the middle of the day wearing a giant yellow hi vis in night vision tights the daft buggers thought it might be fun to gang up on me and find new and exciting ways to damage their cars.. so, if I had a point, which I probably didn’t, it would be that you are still alive unless you’re writing from the beyond and some days the worlds out to get you no matter how you get to work. It’ll get better hen.

ha ha. Unfortunately, its more like every day at the moment. Manchester is full of tosspot drivers who don’t give a shit who’s at the side / front or behind them.
Case in point – on the way back from Llandudno Sunday morning, i was doing 70 in the inside lane of the M60. Two empty lanes at the side of me and some stupid bitch of a woman decided to drive right up my arse for about a mile rather than pull out. And by “up my arse” I mean within 2 foot of my car.

Well, forgive me for being pedantic about this, you really need a separate blog for days when you don’t bike into work. Either that or have some kind of system in place to indicate your whereabouts and your vital signs. Perhaps a ‘live’ heart rate monitor.
