It occurred to me this morning, whilst maintaining AT LEAST 20mph on a 20mph road past two schools and a nursery, that if I was a car, the people behind me would conform and stick to the speed I was doing. Now, why on earth do people not do this whilst a bicycle in front of them, in the middle of the road. Surely it would make more sense to stay behind them – its much safer for them and me…
Sounds exactly like the start of yesterdays post, and it happened again today. With a woman in a really shitty car, who was really fat and had a child seat in the back of her car.
I wonder what her reaction would be if her child got hit on a 20mph road by a car doing 30mph?
Morning Commute:
Total Distance: 9.46 miles
Total Time: 35m 55s
Max Speed: 38.1mph
Avg Speed: 15.8mph
Avg H/Rate: 147bpm
Cadence: 82rpm
Apart from that stupid bitch above, the journey in was pleasant. I took my time. I debated whether to go the way in that I come home, but thought better off it due to that boy racer in a crappy Corsa last night.
I’d also like to say a big thanks to the driver of the Kings Coaches coach who, whilst stuck in traffic, always gave enough room behind me so that he could see me and see what was going on in front. He got a thumbs up, as he could have been a cunt like some coach drivers.
Also, whilst I was gazing across Stockport Road at a woman cycling with a child in a seat on the back, reminiscing about when I used to take Lily that way, Gaz cycled past.
The lady mentioned above stopped behind me at some lights and commented on how she loved my backpack cover and we had a brief chat and off I went.
On Oxford Road, I had the opportunity to lose my temper 1,657 times as people on bikes (they aren’t cyclists – just twats that make proper cyclists lives more difficult) just kept jumping red lights. Grrrrrrrr.
Then at a junction, a cyclist I had previously overtaken just pulled up to the left of me – why the fuck not just stay behind. I’d already overtaken you once… This left me having to unc lip and move my bike further out into the ASL so I could safely move from the junction.
Fucking cyclists.
Fat
I read a post by One Loose Nut this morning. This guy is 5ft 9in and 12st sommat, and he is officially overweight. LOL. I decided to do the same thing and this is what I was presented with:
Now we all know that BMI isn’t accurate – well the people that read this blog know that its a load of bullshit. But this this is on the NHS website. People who are insecure about their weight will be going on here and getting crazy results and suggestions like so:
I’m also being told by the NHS that because of my weight, I am at risk of becoming ill with high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. Oh, and I’m overweight.
Cheeky cunts.
Evening Commute:
Total Distance: 11.01 miles
Total Time: 44m 15s
Max Speed: 38.1mph
Avg Speed: 27.4mph
Avg H/Rate: 147bpm
Cadence: 82rpm
I had an interesting experience this evening on the way home – and I was also lacklustre and couldn’t be arsed and really didn’t want to cycle home
I’d managed to reach Reddish without any incident which was a minor miracle in itself, and I approached the junction, getting through a gap and positioning myself in the ASL to get up the road that I had a problem with on Sunday morning.
I thought nothing of the Lorry / Truck thing that I passed to get there and set off.
For around a mile and a half this driver was behind me. Not near me. At a safe and sensible distance. Travelling at the speed I was travelling at. He had plenty of opportunity to overtake me. I pulled in closer to the road at points so he had room to get past but he didn’t. I gave him the thumbs up twice..
He waited until Windmill Lane before overtaking me and gave me plenty of room, and pulled back in safely…
Then I recognised the number plate… Mmmmm…. I know that number plate – now where do I know that from?
Of course, it was the chap who’s back end hit me a couple of Fridays ago!
What a difference. I have reported the incident to the police but talked to the police about how, although the overtake was stupid, he may not have realised he hit me due to the vehicle he was driving etc etc. Have the police been in touch? I don’t know. It was too late before I realised who it was, as I would have liked to have had a chat and checked what had happened since (as I still need to send back the incident report forms and video – but will be doing that this week).
The only hassle I did have, was right near home, with a woman in a Vauxhall Tigra who, approaching a junction, thought she was more important than me and pushed past to turn left. I did pull up at the side of her and thanked her politely for pushing past me through her open window.
She didn’t respond.
Now I need to chill out and relax my body – its absolutely killing me… Playing football last night wouldn’t have helped!

LOL.
The problem is, as you well know, road users will use that in an argument no matter what the argument is about. And unfortunately, they are right.
We are using the roads, therefore the Highway Code has to be adhered to.
It doesn’t matter if some car drivers don’t stick to it. They will eventually get caught.
It really pissed me off. Really!
I could rant about it. Infact I might dedicate a post just to that.

Can’t agree more. I’ve said it before: it’s the cyclists that are the real problem…

Dick, I don’t know how you survived crossing out of Oxford Street station without getting hit by a lawless person on a bicycle!

20mph overtakes? HTFU, man, pull a bigger gear and ensure you break all 20mph speed limits….
People on bikes vs ‘real’ cyclists. Nope, can’t let you have that one, elitist nonsense. Do drivers become ‘people in cars’ and cease to be drivers when they speed or RLJ? ‘course not. So it is with us, if you are on a bike, from a £5k colnago to an £80 BSO, you ARE a cyclist.
That many cyclists ignore the HC, Cyclecraft, et al, and break the law actually shows how much they have in common with many drivers; selfish, self centred, egocentrics aka typical Homo Sapiens Sapiens.
Worse luck for those of us who try to ride neat and ride nice!

Ha ha! Your right Greg (about the cyclists), I’ll walk away with my tail between my legs. Although a driver who sticks to the rules is a driver, a driver who ignores the rules is a c**t
Inicidentally, I was doing 25.4mph in the 20 – of course, I can’t get done for speeding and was in a big gear, so wasn’t pedalling furiously either, though her overtake was pointless and stupid with a mini roundabout approaching (and I don’t mean that the mini roundabout got legs and started running towards us) – hence me not doing the usual 57.6mph on this road
My point wasn’t about being overtaken, its that if I was a car, they wouldn’t have overtaken me, but because I’m on my bike I’m fair game for their law breaking shenanigans.

I want to see a photo of your backpack cover. Whats so special that it enables complete strangers – females of unknown origin – to come up to you and chat you up?
If it is so great then I want one too.

Did you wave at each other?
Oh and my back pack cover has never attracted females to me. I feel cheated…

I know where his site is – as for waving – no.
And your backpack cover has a picture of a video camera on it – they probably think your a perv. Mine attracted a conversation from a woman who had a child with her on a bike.

Children: the new must-have accessory for the man on the pull.
Actually, I can see how that might work. Advertise that you’re a ‘daddy’ and, on one level, it tells women that you’re safe but, on another, that you’re clearly fertile despite the many hours you spend riding your bike.

LOL.
The problem here is – I don’t go out on my bike to pull! I use it as a means to get from A to B without getting stuck in rush hour traffic.

Of course you don’t intend to pull!
And this clearly makes you hugely attractive to women on bikes with children. Ergo: score one for the home team.

Wow thats a brilliant cover & a great idea. With some advertising in cycle mags or forums you could make a fair few sales I bet.
I read the post and I particularly liked this idea from Andy:
“can you do a ‘Cut me up, and I’ll drag you out of your car at the next lights and beat you to death with my lock. You cunt’ version please?”

You have given me an idea though.

I’m well impressed with that cover. I want one now!
As for cyclists jumping red lights, I was waiting at a red light when two came past me all dressed up ready for the Tour de France and just rode through the red light. They wouldn’t do it in a car or on a motorbike so why do it on a bike?!

I think a lot of cyclists think “I’m only on a bike!”

Mothers on the school run (which they should and could really be doing on foot!) are one of the worst offenders I find.
It makes me sick to the stomach to think what sort of example they are setting their children!
But oh well…such is the state of our lazy culture at the moment.

Angi,
Unfortunately, I am one of those mothers on a school run – although I suppose I don’t have to use the car to get my daughter to school, it would mean I would have to push my bike down for a mile and walk my daughter – which, in itself is dangerous, as I obviously need full attention with my daughter walking down a busy main road.
Although, when she starts school in September, we will be walking her there as its much closer
But then, I do cycle on from the nursery and leave my car.
