99 to go
I’ve been itching to get my hands on the book 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs: A Road Cyclist’s Guide to Britain’s Hills by Simon Warren since I knew of its existence… I’m not a great hill climber, but I will try something… and if it beats me – I’ll try again! Anyway, this is my new challenge – to conquer all 100 hills in this book. Some are 100s of miles away, but there will be lots of opportunities in the future. Here is the list of the climbs, and I’ll update the page as and when I complete them.

Interesting to see Jubilee Tower on that list. It’s about 5 miles from home, and Lancaster CC do their annual hill climb on the stretch (I assume it’s the climb from the Quernmore side). I’m intrigued about what the author has to say about it.
I don’t think it’s that hard compared to the other climbs I see in the list — since I’ve managed to get up it — so I assume it’s a relatively low scorer. That said, it was still my nemesis for a while. The year before last, I tried riding up and had to stop a couple of times. Made it last summer though, and have been up there this year without stopping again. \o/
The Trough of Bowland’s quite pretty.
Interesting challenge. I’ve ordered the book (Amazon say it’s not released yet), and may well have a pop at some myself. Doubt I’ll ever actually get round to more than 20% of them though.
Maybe a load of the Lake District ones, if I ever get fit enough to do the Fred Whitton.

Hey Daren,
Jubilee Tower is given a 6/10 – the photo makes it look like a lovely stretch of road – but we all know how photo’s make a mockery of hills.
I won’t put the whole bit about it on here, but he mentions a nice long 14% stretch up Quernmore Brow and then lots of gruelling twists and turns up to the farm.
It also states a 4,145m climb gaining 230m of height
Glad you ordered the book.
Its got a lovely check list at the back where you can date and mark off the hills you’ve done.

Hey! I’ve been up winters Gibbet! yay me!! I’m not sure where the others are. Maybe I’ve been up them too.

Winters Gibbet is given a 5 out of 10 – 3,680m of road with a 153m gain.
The others up your end are all in Durham. Crawleyside looks pretty.

I never manage to admire the scenery, Joby!
But yeah, that first stretch from Quernmore to Brow Top Farm is a bitch. After that point it’s less severe, but quite twisty. I recall once I ditched at attempt before I got to the farm because my pulse was already about 183 and I wimped out of the hurt. =) Nice views across Morecambe Bay and the Lake District are the reward though.
Here’s a Garmin chart from 2 years ago when I did a ride from home to Jubilee Tower and back; 0 ft to 984 ft — so 300m of height gained from my home. Took me about 55 minutes to get there, and about 22 minutes to get back.
(It’s a bit further than I estimated – about 15 miles round trip)

Its about 8 miles at 10%, so like Chunal 4 or 5 times, with Mow Cop at the end.
What do you think the winning time will be? Under 30mins? Under 20 mins?

I reckon I’d do it in 14 minutes, so it would have to be under that

I got my personal speed record of 50mph coming down from Jubilee Tower. But I was young in those days (20 or so), and therefore invulnerable.

One in the list is Ditchling Beacon. It’s at the end of the London to Brighton bike ride. How much out of 10 does it get?

Only 50mph? Only joking – on a descent, I shit myself above 40!
Toby
Gets 6 out of 10 – 1,445m with 142m height gain.. Sweet

Great list! I’ve done a surprising number of the northwest and Yorkshire ones. But why on earth does Swiss Hill get in?? Just ‘cos of the cobbles. What about Pym Chair from Saltersford Chapel? Hell on earth.

I thought you would have done quite a few due to your Tours and shnizz… He says in the book the reason why he’s missed some out (I think he’s missed Great Dun Fell out too).
Of course, its his opinion
I’m just updating the first batch with the distance and stuff.

Thanks, I just had a moment when I thought all my data was going to be up there with maps and everything, but hey, it’s not really my data I got it all from somewhere, it can be found by anyone, but thanks for leaving them blank. Glad you like the book and good luck doing all 100!!! I’ll follow your progress.

As I’ve said on twitter – I’ll change the layout – Just name and link to my video and gps track.
Thanks for collating the book too. Was surprised at arrived a week ago, but just in time for me to knock off Swiss Hill
I believe we are gonna try and knock off a couple more Saturday morning (hangover permitting)
It’s gonna cost me a fortune in weekends away too
Now a region specific one would be great! There’s plenty of great ones you’ll have missed and I find most stuff out there at the moment useless for suggesting good climbs, and it’s all word of mouth.

Btw i think you may’ve done Holme Moss on your Isle of Skye ride with Chris. Though it is dependent on what side you ride.

Yes, I have done Holme Moss, but that was before the book, so not cheating

As you know I climbed Ditchling Beacon last Sunday. I managed about 900m of the climb before having to give up (mostly as I was overheating!).

No Kings Road in Llandudno either – tis his interpretation.
Maybe there’s another book on the way.
Biggest climb I’ve ever come across is my stairs at 4am on a Saturday morning when I’ve drank way way too much.
You don’t see me complaining about it not being in the book do you
